What are the World University Games?
Organized by the International University Sports Federation, the World University Games is a multi-sport competition held every other year. Participants are men and women between the ages of 17 and 24 and recent students at a college or university.
Before the the games, there was fear that Uganda will not be represented when Ugandan sports official Norman Katende stated that the Ugandan team had been ordered not to travel to Taiwan because of our adherence to the “one China” policy .
Katende published a letter received from the Ugandan Ministry of Foreign Affairs reading:
“The purpose of this letter is to inform you of ‘the one china policy’, which is the position of the government of Uganda. In this regard therefore the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is advising that your Ministry does not send an official delegation to participate.”
But after negotiations between the Uganda team and the government, the team confirmed its participation.
In an update on August 15, Katende published a statement from Makerere University Sports and Recreation Department head Peninnah Kabenge, citing “overaction and misunderstanding” for the Ministry’s actions.
