Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) has Tuesday launched a mobile tax payment platform in conjunction with MTN Uganda to increase efficiency and convenience for its clients.

The platform will allow registered Mobile Money clients to make their tax payments such as VAT, decease Excise Duty, hospital customs duty, physician PAYE and fees like driving permit, police penalties, and court fees instantly using their mobile phones.

It will allow payment of other fees for travel documents, business registration, passports and government tender.

Speaking at the official launch at the URA Headquarters on Tuesday, the Commissioner General, Ms. Doris Akol said the platform is a key milestone in the Authority’s process of automating payments.

“We are transforming into a client centric organization so as to be more responsive to our clients’ demands. This system will improve quality of service delivery and also reduce the cost of compliance,” she said.

She mentioned that system caters for payments not exceeding Shs 5m.

MTN Uganda CEO Mr. Brian Gouldie emphasized that MTN’s investment in new technologies remains critical.

“URA is mandated to collect taxes and this system will ensure an effective tax collection mechanism to then enable good service delivery,” added Gouldie.

He mentioned that MTN currently has 7 million Mobile Money users who make monthly transactions worth billions of shillings.

Gouldie said this is bound to increase the tax base for URA.

Mobile users will initiate the payment by pressing *165# and select ‘Fees and Taxes’ and ‘URA’ after which they can choose to use their PRN or not.

The tax Authority together with other payment solution companies like Ezee money, Payway and Selcom are interfacing to further offer a variety of payment options.

ChimpReports understands that in 2012, URA launched a similar mobile payment platform known as ‘M-Tax’ with then Warid Telecom but Ms Akol said the system was later disrupted by the sale of Warid.

The new platform will have a wider scope in taxes and also comprehensive.
