Standard High School Take Commonwealth Trophy

Commonwealth secretary general raises the trophy before handing it over at the winners

Standard High School Zana emerged football champions of the Commonwealth Youth Ministers’ Cup that took place yesterday at Nambole Stadium.

They played against St. Mary’s New Hope Nabweru in the finals where they won during penalties and took the trophy home.

“The competition was fair and am happy we are the Commonwealth cup champions,” said their coach Herbert Tsama.

Other schools that participated were Kawempe Muslims, St. Margaret Makerere among others and they represented all secondary schools in Uganda at the Commonwealth cup.

The event was graced by the Commonwealth Secretary General, Patricia Scotland who was the guest of honor, Hon. Florence Nakiwala Kiyinji the Chairperson of the Express football club, Hon. Margaret Zziwa and Hon. Cecilia Ogwal.

“I am happy to see the youths so talented and happy, there is nothing Uganda cannot achieve,” said Patricia Scotland before she handed over the trophy to the coach and team captain of Standard High Zana.

Express and Soana were the last clubs to play against each other and Soana emerged winners.

There was a bicycle race too earlier on at the event and it was flagged off by Hon. Zziwa.
