Political Scars Fail to Heal as Ethiopia Blocks Eritrea from 2015 CECAFA

The 77 billion shillings program was launched in the Northern Uganda district of Nebbi by the Ambassador of Denmark to Uganda, sildenafil Mr. Mogens Pedersen.

The Program, which was officially launched on Tuesday will help to increase the household’s agricultural production and marketing.

It will also support the local communities to construct agricultural related rural infrastructure such as access roads, market places, water points (springs and swallow wells) and tree planting.

“The program will over the next four years focus on the recovery of Northern Uganda by creating inclusive and shared growth among communities in West Nile and Acholi-land in order to help close the inequality gap between Northern Uganda and the rest of the country,” Mr. Pedersen said.

According to Danida, the program, which is the third phase of Danish support to Northern Uganda, is part of Denmark’s long term investment in a sustainable post-conflict recovery, reconciliation, and inclusive growth after two decades of violent conflict in the North.

Speaking during the launch, Ambassador Pedersen stressed the importance of addressing inequality and shared growth through women’s empowerment, both as a question of human rights and as an engine of growth.

After longer periods of instability and violent conflict Northern Uganda has had prolonged periods of insurgency and the region lags behind the rest of the country in the main socio-economic indicators.

The program will therefore also contribute to the equitable participation of Northern Uganda in the economic development of the country.

The Launch event was attended by over 600 people, including beneficiaries, partners and government officials from both the local and central government.

The two countries had political differences that took them to war between Mid 1998 to mid 2000.

It is for this political tensions that Ethiopia decided to bar their archenemy from entering their country for East Africa’s biggest showpiece.

CECAFA secretary general, Nicholas Musonye has been quoted by international media indicating that he has thrown his weight behind the hosts saying “that the regionally soccer body ‘must respect’ Ethiopia’s position.”

Meanwhile, all situations point that both Zambia and Malawi will be participating in the championships as guests to fill the void.

Eritrea has had a fair share of drama in the previous tournament as their players and officials have been using the chance to flee the country.

In 2012, fifteen Eritrean players and a team doctor went missing and claimed political asylum at the Uganda. Ten players successful applied for assylum in Botswana after an international worldcup qualifier match.

The tournament will take place from November 21st to December 6th.
