Police Stops Crime Preventers From Staying at Posts, Stations

The Police spokesperson Asan Kasingye has said it is wrong for crime preventers to stay at police posts and stations.

Speaking about an incident where a crime preventer was killed by unknown assailants who attacked Kyetume police post in Mukono district last week, Kasingye said crime preventers should not sit at posts and stations because they are not designated to.

“They should work hand in hand with communities and LCs that recommended them to give information to police in case there is need, “Kasingye said.

“To camp at a police station and putting on police uniform is not only wrong but also illegal.”

Kasingye said crime preventers are meant to be in communities and can help police in case of patrolling their areas other than staying at stations.

Working under the community policing program, crime preventers are a group of civilians recommended by villages to help identify criminals as well as averting crimes in their localities.

The crime preventers have however in the past assumed roles of policemen including handling cases at police stations which the public has on several occasions complained about.
