Police Officers Remanded over Rwenzori Attacks

Five police officers attached to Bundibugyo and Ntoroko Police Stations have been charged with neglect of duty and remanded to Katojo Government Prison.

The accused officers are; former Bundibugyo DPC, decease visit web SP Alex Mwine, Bundibugyo District Crime Intelligence officer, AIP Jochwonia Thembo, Jimmy Osomere, Alfred Muhindo and Sylvester Thembo .

These appeared before Fort Portal Chief Magistrate’s Court presided over by His Worship, Samuel Emokol on Thursday.

Prosecution told court that the accused officers neglected their duty stations when assailants raided the district institutions, killed deployed officers and scores of civilians.

July, 5th 2014, assailants believed to be Rwenzururu youths (Esyemango ze Rwenzururu) attacked Kasese ,Bundibugyo and Ntoroko districts leaving over 90 people dead, scored injured and over 200 imprisoned.

Appearing before court, the accused officers denied the allegations.

However, they failed to produce substantial sureties who could secure them bail.

According to the Magistrate, the sureties presented were disqualified for giving false information by identifying themselves in villages where they don’t reside.

The presiding Chief Magistrate remanded them to Katojo Government prison untill the next hearing.

Over 200 people including civil servants, Rwenzururu officials and police officers are in behind bars at Katojo Prison in Fort Portal for allegedly participating in the July 5th attacks on the three districts of  Kasese, Ntoroko and Bundibugyo.
