It is here that Dr Besigye was born and raised 59 years ago.

Hundreds of supporters from all walks of life have gathered in the Western Uganda town to show their support of the NRA historical, who broke ranks with the Movement in 2001 to form an opposition front to fight President Museveni.

In a convoy of cars and motorcycles, Besigye is today expected to tell the people of Rukungiri why he deserves their support after losing thrice to President Museveni in previous elections.

For the last week, Besigye has emphasised that he would rally the country to stand up in defiance against Museveni, remarks that have unsettled the government.

Police boss Gen Kale Kayihura on Sunday expressed shock that Besigye is publicly declaring a campaign to defy the law, insisting “we shall not allow him.”

In Rukungiri, streets have been swept clean to allow Besigye’s remarkable entry into the town.

Women and children are visibly excited ahead of Besigye’s rally.

The youth are dancing to latest tunes praising Besigye and urging the people to rally behind him for the 2016 presidency.

In Mbarara, Besigye made a stopover during which fans gave him money.
