Otunnu Faces Suit for Masquerading as UPC President

Water Governance Institute is a nonprofit organization that engages government and other stakeholders on policy, governance and development issues related to water, Oil, Gas and Other extractive resources.

“This is an exciting moment for WGI, having been selected out of 450 applicants worldwide to be among 12 awardees of the grant,” Mr. Bazira said.

He noted that the selected districts were chosen on the basis of their poverty indices and income disparities between the poor and the rich.

“The intervention is a game-changer in that it demystifies traditional fish farming practices and domesticates them into households instead of natural lake, river & wetland water systems,” Mr Bazira explained.

He added that it is an integrated fish and horticulture farming in a closed looped water recycling system.

He noted that it is a low cost intervention that can be done by majority poor households in Uganda.

“It will contribute fish and horticultural product stock on the market and easy availability and access. The intervention will address the nutrient deficiency challenges associated with lack of good protein and nutrients among poor households,” Mr Bazira divulged, adding that it will also provide the much needed income and help shift the households from poverty.

His visit falls just ahead of the Central African Republic’s presidential transition, and just after the 50th anniversary of the canonization of the Uganda Martyrs.

Preparations have already begun for the celebration of the Golden Anniversary of the canonization, with the local Church holding a diocese-wide conference on the 22 saints.

The Shrine of both the Anglican and Catholic martyrs at Namugongo will be Francis’ first main stop in Uganda.

In his speech, Otunnu noted that UPC was represented in the alliance and prepared to offer all the support to the alliance’s choice Amama Mbabazi in the 2016 general elections.

This now is being termed as an insult to the party and disrespect of last week’s High Court ruling by Justice Yasin Nyanzi, which declared Hon Akena as the duly elected party President.

“The ruling recognized Akena as the official UPC party president and we expected no other person out there to parade themselves claiming the same office; it is very unfortunate that people who claim to be educated are continuing acting in such a manner,” observed the party National Chairman Lawrence Okae at a press conference at Uganda House on Wednesday.

“All relevant legal proceedings ought to be taken against such members; we shall do anything possible to bring Otunnu and his group to book so that they can respect and recognize the leadership of Jimmy Akena,” Okae added.

The party Secretary General, Edward Sseganyi noted, “You know we are currently in the campaign season and some people are positioning themselves for different selfish gains. Otunnu wants to prove that he is of substance to the [Amama] camp and yet he is nothing at all,” Sseganyi claimed.

“We shall first employ peaceful means of engaging him in talks but if he fails, we shall be forced to head to court so as to protect the image of our party.”
