The National Resistance Movement (NRM) Electoral Commission has finalized preparations to replace the late Iganga District Woman Member of Parliament, Grace Haliat Kaudha who passed away last month.
Kaudha succumbed to a child birth complication after being rushed to Mulago Hospital’s Kawempe branch.
The party electoral commission chairman, Dr. Tanga Odoi told reporters at the party headquarters in Kyadondo that the commission is set to organize primaries to come up with the candidate who will favorably compete with other candidates in the race.
He said the party held consultative meetings with all stakeholders in Iganga yesterday on July 31 and found that there is high enthusiasm among the locals.
Tanga called upon interested party members to pick up nomination forms from the party headquarters from July 31 to August 3.
From 3rd to 16th August, he said, the party will update the register for Iganga district at the district party offices.
“Nomination of candidates shall be held from 3rd to 4th August at the party EC headquarters; we shall thereafter hold joint campaigns as mandated by the party constitution from 5th to 16th August at the district,” Tanga said.
“Polling shall take place on Friday 18th August at the district. For any conflicts that may arise, the party has set 19th to 21st August to have them resolved.”
Tanga also warned members to restrain from any form of violence during and after elections.
“Iganga is a hot spot district when it comes to elections; in fact primaries in this district were repeated in 2015. There are fears being expressed by some of the aspiring candidates that the situation is going to be the same,” Tanga noted.
“I would like to allay those fears by stating that I myself together with the other commissioners shall personally be in charge of this election and will ensure a smooth, peaceful, free and fair election for the people of Iganga.”
