Mbarara district and local leaders on Saturday received 48 heifers from the Operation Wealth Creation to help them boost their incomes.

The vaccinated and inseminated heifers were handed out to Local Council leaders, district councilors, veterans, and widows in 10 sub counties and 5 divisions of the western district.

Mbarara LC V Chairman Capt. JB Bamuturaki said the beneficiaries procedurally applied for the cows in 2015 and were considered to be model farmers, and got the green light from the district council.

“We came to your homes, recorded, verified and documented you to receive cows. Now they are here; thanks for remaining patient for almost 2 years,” the chairman told the recipients.

Bamuturaki however, revealed that leaders from Nyakayojo division and Bubaare Sub County were not given heifers because the area is under quarantine after Foot and Mouth Disease was detected there.

He went on and advised the farmers to take good care of the given heifers and keep records on them.

“You should take these cows as your own and not government property.  They don’t belong to President Museveni or the district chairman. They are yours. Take good care of them.”

The OWC coordinator Mbarara district Lt. Col. Sam Karogo Murari revealed that the cows were procured at Shs. 33million in season B of the program

He said that the next season will be between March and May next year and will  benefit farmers at household level.
