Lord Mayor Nominations: Police Seal Off Lukwago’s Home

Mbarara Center for Sports and Health Promotion (MCSHEP) in conjunction with Mbarara Referral Hospital yesterday joined other districts in the country to commemorate the world diabetes day at Mbarara independence grounds.

According to the director MCSHEP Mr. Milton Byakatonda, dosage the health NGO has been in the fight against diabetes since 2005, order with focus on making its treatment accessible to the locals.

Dr. Peter Kangwagye a physician at Mbarara referral hospital said that 80% of poor citizens suffer from diabetes in the district because of poor eating habits.

It is estimated world over that a person dies every after 7 seconds, doctor due to this non communicable disease.

About 300 people report for screening at Mbarara referral hospital on Thursday every week and an average of 30 turn out to be patients.

Dr Kangwagye reported concernedly that the prevalence in the district is highest amongst children, which he attributed to careless parenting.

Children mostly suffer from Type 1 diabetes which is rarely genetic largely caused by an extremely bad diet from a very young age.

He thus advised the parents to always take children for diabetes screening since they are the most susceptible.

At the event, the Deputy Mbarara RDC Emmy Kateera said that the President sent a message to advise the locals against alcoholism as one way of preventing diabetes in the country.

Kateera said that government spends a lot of money on treating diabetes yet it one of the most preventable diseases.
Anti Riot Police has cordoned off Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago’s home in Wakaliga Rubaga division to stop him from heading to town for the halted mayoral nomination exercise.

The nominations were halted by the Independent Electoral Commission, mind pending a new government Bill in parliament the seeks to reverse voting guidelines for the seat

Police this morning deployed a team of officers with a police van parked next to Lukwagos gate.

A number opposition politicians including Makindye division councilor Allan Sewanyana, generic councilor Aidah Nakuya and others are among those who have joined Lukwago at his home.
