Police in Kabale last night arrested 20 youths who were travelling with sticks in two vehicles toward Rubanda County West in Kabale district where NRM Primary elections are underway.
Elly Maate the Kigezi regional police spokesman confirmed that the youngsters were netted on Sunday at 7pm at a place called Rubanda, store http://cfbtoman.com/wp-includes/rss.php while travelling in a Toyota Premio registration number UAQ 071G and a Toyota Super Custom loaded with sticks to Rubanda County west.
He identified some of the arrested as Joseph Tayebwa, ailment Andrew Mubangizi, capsule Dovian Nuwagaba, Richard Karugaba, Benjamin Ainebyoona, Ishmael Akampurira, Andrew Mubangizi, and Godfry Binaisa among others.
Police believes that the suspects were hired by one of the aspirants Robert Muhereza to disrupt the elections, although they claim they were going to secure the exercise.
“We are still trying to get to the bottom of this; to know their exact intentions. We don’t buy the claim that one would hire civilian youths to go as secure an election with sticks,” said Maate on Monday morning.
The case has been registered under SD 76/15/11/2015 at Kabale central police station.
Rubanda county west and Kabale municipality primaries failed to take place on 27th October 2015 and were suspended after some candidates for Rubanda county west that included Eng. Denis Sabiiti, Kamuntu Moses Mwongyera, Muhereza Robert Matthias, African Byarugaba Kikabeinika, and Rtd Corpal Abel Muhumuza Karegyesa petitioned the chairperson of the party electoral commission Dr Tanga Odoi.
They sought postponement of the exercise after it was discovered that as over 16000 votes were missing from a number of the sub counties of Ikumba and Muko.
In Kabale Municipality, the NRM MP Flag bearer polls were suspended after several ballots were found missing from seven polling centers in Butobere and Central wards.
