The Mayor being welcomed by Minister Frank Tumwebaze

Prime Minister, thumb http://cherrylanefarms.com/wp-content/plugins/nextgen-gallery/products/photocrati_nextgen/modules/attach_to_post/package.module.attach_to_post.php Dr Ruhakana Rugunda on Wednesday toured the University of Zambia’s School of Medicine and Teaching Hospital where he qualified as a physician and kicked off his professional career about 40 years ago.

Dr Rugunda was accompanied by the Zambian Minister of Health, advice http://consolibyte.com/wp-admin/includes/ms-deprecated.php Joseph Kasonde and the Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports, clinic http://cyclopeperu.com/wp-content/themes/photome/templates/script-map-shortcode.php Christopher Mulenga.

He was received by the Acting Deputy Vice Chancellor, Prof. Bizeck Phiri and the Hospital Managing Director, Dr Lackson Kasonka.

Dr Rugunda completed his medical degree course at the University of Zambia after leaving Makerere University Medical School.

He later studied and graduated from the University of California, Berkeley with a Master of Public Health.

Before joining Ugandan politics, Rugunda also worked at the United Nations Institute for Namibia, as a physician at DC General Hospital in Washington DC, and at Kenyatta National Hospital in Nairobi, Kenya.

“This visit is my home coming because I graduated and started my employment record here,” he noted.  He compared the Zambia University Teaching Hospital (UTH) to Mulago where government has undertaken ambitious renovation and expansion programmes.

Dr Rugunda said that three new hospitals in Kampala were being set up or upgraded to decongest Mulago. He explained that although the demand for medical doctors remained largely unmet, the additional facilities would help to decongest the referral hospital.

Dr Kasonka said the Zambian Ministry of Health and that of Community, Mother and Child Health were also addressing congestion by upgrading six health centres into mini-hospitals in Lusaka.

According to him, the hospitals would develop capacity to handle ordinary cases while UTH remains with cases of serious complications. UTH is the principal medical training institution in the country for medical students, interns and postgraduate doctors.

It also trains nurses as well as clinical officers. With close to 1,700 beds and 250 baby cots, it serves as the country’s specialist medical Centre receiving referrals from all over the country.
