Gomba Scrap Aside Ssingo to Clinch Masaza Title

Teams lining up before the epic battle

Saturday, August 26

Gomba managed to see off a resilient Ssingo team with a 1-0 victory in 2017 Masaza Cup final game played at Mandela National Stadium, Namboole.

Nicholas Kabonge’s screamer in the second half was the biggest difference as the two teams fought for the most prestigious accolade in Buganda Football system

This title becomes the 4th for Gomba County team after previous victories in 2004, 2009 and 2011.

Key Highlights of the game

The game started at a high tempo with both sides missing a couple of chances in the first 15 minutes, notably Gomba’s Allan Sserunga failing to tap in Shakidu Mbaziira’s well laid cross.

Steven Mukwala could have opened the scoresheet for Ssingo at the half hour mark but after cutting inside from the left flank, his curved shot went an inch off the target, as the first half ended goalless.

Back from the break, Nicholas Kabonge’s brilliance came at the fore when he launched a powerful shot away from 30 yards to put Gomba into the lead.

Ssingo Coach Shafic Bisaso made a brave decision when he withdrew his top target man, Steven Mukwala in the 68th minute giving but Gomba continued to look a better team as Kabonge commanded the middle of the park.

Ssingo’s Jamil Nvule Kisitu missed a seater in the 88th minute as Gomba held on to seal its 4th title.
