A 30 year old Congolese national has died in a cell at Kisoro Police Station in Kisoro district.
The deceased has been identified as Rafael Muromba, a resident of Kabuga-Mpiimpi village in Busanza, North Kivu province in Eastern DRC.
Muromba died on Tuesday at around 06:00am in the morning.
He had been arrested on 04th June 2017 from Nteko parish, Nyabwishenya sub-county Kisoro district, on charges of aggravated robbery.
Muromba, together with others who escaped, was picked by night patrol of Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) attached to Bunyangaro Army Detach, after they were found robbing homes in Nteko.
He was detained at Nteko police post and later transferred to Kisoro Police station.
Charles Okoto, the Kisoro District Police Commander says that on arrival at the police counter, Muromba started complaining of stomach ache and was immediately rushed to Kisoro police health unit for treatment.
Okoto says on Monday evening, Muromba told the police nurse that he was feeling better and was taken back to police cells pending investigations.
His condition however worsened in the wee hours of Tuesday at around 05:50am when other suspects heard him breathing abnormally and alerted police officers on duty.
Okoto says the intervention was too late and at 06:00am he suspect breathed his last.
Elly Maate, the police spokesperson for Kigezi region says that the body of the deceased is still lying at Kisoro Hospital Mortuary as security operatives in Uganda are liaising with their counterparts in DRC for repatriation of the body.
Maate however, ruled out torture as the cause of death, saying that that post-mortem report pointed to liver cancer.
