Running for hope is fun and for some an opportunity to rehearse for the main MTN marathon a week after. More importantly though it provides you with a chance to join hands in touching the life of a young child like Tony (a thirteen year old boy) who had been tied to a pole for months by his auntie and left until he was severely malnourished, partially blind, unable to feed himself and incontinent; in addition he now had complication in the bone structure of his back that made him stoop and he could not walk because he had been immobile for so long.

One would ask why his auntie did this to him. All we know is that Tony’s mother passed away and so he was sent back to his father who abandoned him at his aunt’s home, his auntie was a single mother looking after a mentally disturbed child and doing odd jobs at the market to earn a few coins to feed herself and the child.

It would appear that an addition of another child who had several epileptic fits daily was more than she could handle and certainly not what she wished for.

After nearly a year of intensive feeding and care in hospital as well as surgery to release the contractures in his legs, Tony is now able to stand upright and take several steps with a little support.

Ideally Tony should have been discharged from hospital but he is spending months on Hope Ward so we can provide continued physiotherapy (mainly because if discharged his home would be too far in the village for him to continue to attend physiotherapy sessions) that would see him walk and even run one day – hopefully in the next year.

The run is for all children and vulnerable/needy adults and youth treated on Hope ward especially those who having suffered great pain are given a chance to walk again, to live again; let us all put on our trainers/sneakers and run for Hope.

The run will start at 7am in the morning. There will be a shorter route for those who would like to walk as well. The map will be provided upon registration as well as a T’shirt.

Refreshments will be provided to all runners on the day of the run. There are many other ways you can support Hope ward; through annual or semi annual bed sponsorships, sponsoring individual patients on the ward or special donations, according to a press release.

This will be the first ever PRAU People’s Choice Award.

PRAU is an organisation that brings together all proffessional public relations practitioners and PR students. To be part of this year’s PR Excellence Awards, according to a press release, one needs to vote the company/organisation one believes deserves the PRAU People’s Choice Award.

“This award will promote the public’s participation in the PR Excellence Awards and get their views on which organization or company (among the entries) rises above others in maintaining a good relationship with its audiences and promoting the company/organization’s values, promise, and core business,” reads the press release in part.

“The company/organization with the highest votes tallied from the website and all PRAU social networking sites, will win this award. It’s that easy.” Students will part with Shs50,000 while members have to fork out a paltry Shs80,000 as entry fee. Non-members will pay Shs 100,00 to access the venue.

The Awards Gala night is slated for Friday November 4 at Kampala Serena Hotel.
