Oil 'Showdown' Debate Kicks Off At 2pm

salve geneva; font-size: small;”>During a week-long retreat at Kyankwanzi, NRM MPs, according to acting party chief whip David Bahati, resolved to somersault earlier resolutions which included a moratorium put on the execution of oil agreements.

In this case, President Museveni told legislators that the moratorium must be revised because it negatively impacts on the on-going transaction of the $2.9bn Total-CNOOC farm out deal with Tullow Oil.

Fiery MPs Theodore Ssekikuubo, Wilfred Niwagaba, Chris Baryomunsi, Mohammed Nsereko, Cerinah Nebanda and Barnabas Tinkasiimire who stormed out of the retreat, are expected to lead the offensive against plans to review the resolutions.

They have described the move as a sinister plot to hijack the independence of Parliament and entrench corruption in the oil sector. The plenary session kicks off at 2pm today.

The recent oil debates have since been dramatic with fears they could spark a huge split within the NRM party.

We shall keep you posted as drama unfolds.
