Bukenya Is Gravely Ill

Commonly known as Mahogany, online Bukenya’s lawyers Macdusmus Kabega today morning rushed to court, store arguing his client is constitutionally entitled to bail.

Kabega argued that Bukenya, sale who was remanded yesterday to Luzira prison, intends to travel to Nairobi urgently for treatment. Bukenya, whose private life has of recent startled the nation after tabloid exposure, was yesterday charged with abuse of office during procurement of BMW cars for 2007 Common Wealth Meeting.

Anti- Corruption Court Chief Magistrate Irene Akankwasa remanded him after committing him to High Court for trial, implying his bail granted to him in June had expired.

Security was tight at the Anti-Corruption court. Bukenya states in his application that he is gravely ill and had scheduled an appointment with Kenya doctors. He asks court to release his passport to enable him travel abroad. By press time, the application was still in the hands of the head of court Paul Mugamba.

However, observers fear Bukenya could flee to exile, never to return.
