Bukenya Jailed Over Shs6.5bn Chogm Deal

This came after the Anti-corruption court in Kampala cancelled bail earlier granted to him. He was then committed to the High Court for trial over his involvement in the abuse of public funds during the2007 Common Wealth meeting in Kampala.

Prosecution alleges that he flouted regulations during a procurement deal for vehicles and motor bikes ahead of the summit.

Prof. Bukenya will face a rough ride in the coolers for giving express orders for direct procurement of BMW cars from Motor Care Uganda Limited.

Prosecution insists this was a sheer hijack of the procurement process by stopping international bidding, dosage a move that cost the tax payer a staggering shs6bn shillings.

The lawyer of the maverick professor of insects Macdusmand Kabega labored to block the committal in vain. The shrewd learned friend argued that the IGG does not wield to commit the troubled VP to the High Court before being over ruled by the Anti-corruption court chief magistrate Irene Akankwasa.

This could fuel speculation that Bukenya is a sacrificial lamb since his co-accused especially Foreign Affair Minister Sam Kutesa, prescription Premier Amama Mbabazi and State Minister for Works John Byabagambi are still at large or controversially exonerated.

Nevertheless, the dramatic event comes at a time when Bukenya was mobilizing fellow Buganda MPs in a move political pundits say was aimed at “building a political base” to fight what he has in the past termed as mafias in government.

He recently signed a petition spearheaded by rebel NRM MPs and shadow Attorney General Abdu Katuntu to recall Parliament to discuss the contentious oil agreements signed between government and oil companies.

He has of recent been seen in company of rebel NRM leaders including fire-spitting Kahinda Otafiire.

We are not yet clear whether this is political persecution but it’s common knowledge in offcial circles that so many mistakes were made during CHOGMdue to inadequate time to prepare for the international conference.

Shortly after he was sacked, Bukenya said he was a victim of political intrigue.
