2016 UMEA Games Kick Off in Masaka

The 2016 UMEA Muslim Solidarity games officially kicked off on Good Friday at the Masaka Recreational center with 88 schools and over 2000 participants in girls and boys’ football, stomach netball, volleyball and Handball. The event is expected to run for four days upto Easter Monday.

The tournaments were flagged off by Second Deputy Katikiro of Buganda, Al Hajji Dr. Dr. Twaha Kawaase Kigongo who lauded organizers of the event and also urged parents to encourage their children to take part in sports saying, “Sports is key for healthy living, socializing and improvement of welfare. I urge parents to encourage their children play football and other sporting disciplines.”

Chairman of the UMEA Games LOC Hajji Twahil Kitezeela was glad the games have already achieved the intended objectives.

“Raising a record 88 schools with close to 2000 participants shows we have already achieved the intended goals of promoting unity among schools, peace, spotting talent from the grass roots and consolidating the islam pillar among the schools” Kitezeela said.

Handball, netball, volleyball are being played at Masaka S.S whilst football is hosted at various playing grounds – Gayaza, Hill Road, University play ground, Kitovu arena and the Masaka Recreational stadium.

This year’s edition of the UMEA Games has been supported by National Insurance Corporation (NIC), Crown Beverages Limited (under Pepsi Brand) and FUFA, who donated 10 footballs.
Kibuli S.S is the defending overall champion.
