Then fist-fights followed shortly after Denis Namara, the chairperson of the NRM Youth League, read a statement cancelling the so-called Namboole youth meeting that some youth had clandestinely summoned without knowledge of the party secretariat.

Forwarding Mbabazi for presidency

According to the statement read out by the faction interim spokesperson, Vincent Kaggwa, the group demanded that NRM party allows Prime Minister, Amama Mbabazi, to contest for the presidency to avoid regressing to the previous regimes which were characterized by constitutional instabilities.

Flanked by Richard Kirenkyankuba, the faction youth coordinator, Kagwa further called for a peaceful transition from the current president to another.

The group further cited the poor conditions which affect them including among others; absolute poverty, unemployment, medical constraints and underpayment of employees by foreign companies.

“Power belongs to the people of Uganda, we want a peaceful transition come 2016.”

The same statement also pleaded with Mbabazi to contest for presidency since he is “the only candidate who can address the current crisis”.

“We call upon the president to stop listening to advisers of saboteurs who have instead made people to hate the regime, one of them being IGP Gen Kale Kayihura.”

“Uganda is our country and it will always be our country thus the need for a fundamental change,” concluded the statement.

Opondo speaks out

According to government spokesperson, Ofwono Opondo, Dennis Namara heads the legitimate NRM National Youth League hence has the powers to halt any mischief.

“Any NRM so-called youth group purporting to call a delegates’ conference must be frauds and shouldn’t be believed,” pointed out Opondo in a social media message.

“Only the NRM party chairman (Museveni) in consultation with Secretary General has the mandate to convene delegates’ conference.”

Opondo further disowned the new Pro-Amama group saying, “NRM has no organ known as “NRM Poor Youth Forum” to call any meeting of the party anywhere”.

In a statement released last week, NRM Secretariat denied calling a National Youth League conference at Namboole.

“This is therefore, to advise all NRM Youth leaders that no such meeting will take place and consequently they should not travel to Kampala for such a meeting,” read the statement.
