But as is always the case, Al-Shabaab terrorists melted into the thorny bushes as soon as the troops from AMISOM rolled in with their heavy tanks and personnel.

Even though the Somalia forces were outnumbered they bravely fought off the terrorists and held them at bay for nearly an hour before Ethiopian peacekeepers arrived.

Al-Shabaab has in the recent past started ambushing vehicles plying the busy Baidoa- Mogadishu road.

In the past weeks, they attacked a vehicle and motorbike carrying khat, looted the green stimulant chewed by Somalis and burnt the vehicle and motorbike

Locals say since Al-Shabaab lost major towns in a renewed offensive by aligned forces from Somalia and AMISOM, the loathsome militant group Al Shabaab have turned into highway robbers looting the public and extorting from poor Somalis at illegal checkpoints across the busy road linking Baidoa and the capital city Mogadishu.

Major Hailu Meresa, who led the Ethiopian peacekeepers reinforcement team to support the Somalia army, reassured the public that the anti-peace elements will be dealt with accordingly.

“We came here to respond to the Somalia National Army who were ambushed by Al-Shabaab. Unfortunately just before we arrived at the scene of the ambush Al-Shabaab terrorists fled the scene into the bushes so we are now securing the road and our forces have gone into the bush to see whether the enemy is still around” said Major Hailu Meresa as he assured the public that the terrorist group will be dealt with to stop such attacks in future.
