Godfrey Nyakahuma, the long serving district NRM chairperson was appointed RDC Hoima, Rose Mande Byabasaija, the treasurer was appointed deputy RDC Ibanda while Mrs Baguma Nyakwera was taken to Kyegegwa as full RDC, thus creating a big vacuum.
Joseph Mashuhuko, an NRM cadre, expressed disappointed with Gowani Yakubu, a political assistant to the minister of Local government, Adolf Mwesige, who appointed himself the new NRM chairman.
“I got surprised to hear Gowani introducing himself as NRM chairman during a talk show on Better FM a month ago. Even at a public debate on multi-party system at Kagote S.D.A, Julius Mwanga the Director KRC introduced him as NRM chairperson Kabarole,” Mashuhuko said.
“Recently, when President Museveni called a meeting for the LC5 district chairpersons and district NRM chairpersons from all over the country, its Gowani who attended on behalf of the NRM Party Kabarole.”
Accordingly, Gowani even received the Shs 2m for mobilising the NRM members but “we as members, we do not know him”.
“We know him as a messenger to Minister Mwesige.”
Mashuhuko said that they will remove Gowani from office if he dares entering in it.
Evelyn Junda, the Kabarole district vice chairperson NRM Youth League, said the decision taken to appoint Gowani as NRM chairman deprives members of their rights to vote and is intended to kill the party by the greedy members.
“Gowani has never been a member on either the NRM mainstream; NRM youth league structure, NRM women league, NRM disability or even at sub county level. We want the chairman NRM Electoral Commission to come and inform us whether he appointed Gowani,” Junda clarified.
Eunice Habomugisha, the chairperson Women League Fort Portal municipality, said conflictsin the ruling party result from failure to follow the party constitution.
“The limbo that Kabarole district is experiencing now has left members in a dilemma because the mafia has no powers and the NRM cadres were not consulted. Minister Mwesige has turned dictatorial. If we are to build a strong NRM, the National Legal Advisor and Secretary General must intervene.”
John Manume, the NRM publicity secretary, said he was not happy with the decision taken.
“They should have at least have appointed Alex Ruhunda, the Fort Portal MP, who has been NRM’s secretary general NRM.”
