Elatu said the officer is alleged to have shot in the back one Erick Kasonga, a resident of Kikora trading centre, while attempting to disperse a crowd threatening to burn a police post at the close of last week.
Elatu further noted that the rowdy incident was sparked off after police arrested some four suspected robbers the previous day.
“This angered the residents who were armed with stones and clubs and attempted to stop the police from taking their colleagues to the cells.”
“They also wanted to burn down a vehicle which police had brought to transfer the suspects,” Elatu narrated.
The police commander said that in retaliation, the police officer shoot twice in the air and a stray bullet hit one of the residents in the back.
The police officer later fled the scene as the angry mob wanted to disarm him and left the gun in his house.
