Addressing residents of Wabinyonyi in Nakasongola district during one of his campaign rallies on Tuesday afternoon, illness the president said he has on several occasions received reports of harassment of fishermen by the officers of the bodies which he said is wrong.

The units have been serving a number of roles such as licencing boats, nurse vetting fishers, medical and enforcing safety guidelines for fishing operations among others.

“I was in Buliisa recently and was told that fishermen are being disturbed by these fisheries bodies. I got similar reports from Busia,” Museveni said.

“As president of Uganda, I have dissolved them completely from all lakes because they are useless.”

The President tasked the local communities and fishermen around the lakes to choose among themselves people who are knowledgeable about the lake and to form committees that would oversee the water bodies and fishing activities.

He then urged the communities around the water bodies including those from Ssese, Bugungu and Buliisa to jealously guard the lakes and the fish therein because it’s part of their livelihood.
