This year’s World Tourism Day due on 27th September 2017 will be celebrated on the Ssese Islands Buggala, government has announced.
Steven Asiimwe, the Executive Director Uganda Tourism Board revealed that the celebrations will entail weeklong activities from 22nd to 27th September.
The 2017 celebrations will be flagged off with Tulambule Ssese Islands, a domestic tourism promotion campaign aimed at encouraging Ugandans to tour places around Uganda in order to become Uganda’s tourism ambassadors themselves.
“Our major aim is to make sure all Ugandans participate and take part in the week long activities which will give people of Ssese, Greater Masaka and the country at large an opportunity to showcase their various tourism attractions and activities,” Asiimwe said.
Some of the activities lined up are Tourism games, tourism parliamentary debate, tourism public debate, Ssese wild run, Boat regatta, wrestling, swimming, unveiling Miss Tourism Uganda, a cultural expo and many others.
“We will be celebrating this sector that is bringing in 10 percent of our GDP, 23 percent of exports revenue, a big forex exchange earner for the county and one of the biggest employers of youth and women then,” he said.
UTB will closely work with the Ministry of Tourism, Uganda Wildlife Authority, Uganda Wildlife Education Center, Civil Aviation Authority and the Hotel and Tourism Training Institute to organize the activities.
