The bloody incident that started within bodyguards resulted into reinforcement of dozens of SPLA soldiers from the state capital Malakal.
An internal wrangle between bodyguards started at 6pm and shortly graduated to a serious fight leaving one of them whose name was yet to be established badly injured and was rushed to hospital.
Unfortunately, the pickup the bodyguards were using was abruptly stopped by armed men who turned out to be the militia from Johnson Olony’s group. Gun battle immediately ensued between the two groups and intensified for hours. The numerical strength of the Olony’s militia made them to momentarily defeat the governor’s bodyguards and they started advancing to his home.
Luckily enough a distress communication was made to SPLA for reinforcement since the attackers were swiftly aiming at the Simon Kun’s home. The reinforcement from Malakal miraculously arrived when the governor’s home was still some distance away but had already been hit three times by the militia group.
Three bodyguards are still missing up to now according to sources and two others seriously injured. It is not clear if the event was just circumstantial or planned.
Just two weeks ago, the governor’s brother, Brig. Gatwech Kun Pouch who was commanding SPLA under President Salva Kiie, in Lakes State, defected to SPLA-IO under former vice president, Dr. Machar.
