UPDF’s Soldier Who Killed 8 In Kanungu to Face Court Martial

The UPDF 2nd Division Spokesman, ambulance Maj. Ronald Kakurungu has revealed that the UPDF soldier who opened fire last month and killed 8 people including civilians is set to be arraigned before the Court Martial in Kanungu.

Kakurungu made the revelation while addressing a press conference at his office in Mbarara town yesterday.

Lance Corporal Moses Katungwensi Katoko a UPDF soldier attached to Mburamizi 307 Brigade in Kanungu District on 21st April shot eight people dead and handed himself over to police.

The deceased included his own wife, try another colleague and six civilians.

Major Kakurungu said that the suspect’s file will be taken to Kampala for guidance before he is brought before the court martial in Makenke Barracks soon.

He added that the bereaved families were given UGX 1million each and those that were injured were given UGX 500,000 and the medical bills at Bwindi Hospital paid

Meanwhile, Maj. Kakurungu revealed that the situation in the Rwenzori has finally stabilized following a successful Operation Usalama commissioned by President Yoweri Museveni to end weeks of bloodshed in the area.

Close to fifty people in the districts of Kasese and Bundibugyo are said to have lost lives in the tribal based armed conflict.

“We elevated security in the Ruwenzori region and this has yielded peace and stability in the area,” he said.
