UOC to Build Multi-Million Training Centre for Police

Scrap Buyers face lowly ranked Red Shooters in the only fixture scheduled for Saturday as the Pool Association of Uganda league enters match day six.

The metal dealers have won all their five opening fixtures while the Red Shooters have been misfiring with only a single win currently occupying the red zone.

Roniz who were relegated from the top division last season seem to have regrouped according to one of their team managers Peter Wasyeba promising to make a first bounce back to the premier division.

“The team is in good shape now. We had some problems but that is now a thing of the past. We’ll stop at nothing but promotion.”

Roniz trounced Afro Pool Club 14-11 away in Kampala last time out and are facing a police side that beat Hoima 15-10 last outing.

Seven other fixtures will take center stage on Saturday in the league one except for Mbale versus Global Com that has been postponed.

Miss Tourism Teso Betty Benson Nyachwo is fighting for her life at Mulago Referral Hospital after sustaining injuries in a road accident that claimed three people on Saturday along Kampala-Masaka road.

“I have no particular idea of what really happened but it’s alleged that our car was over speeding,” she told Chimp Corp Pat Larubi at Mulago Referral Hospital where she was admitted on Saturday night.

Larubi says he found Nyachwo in the causality ward at about 10:15pm in critical condition and on oxygen.

Another victim of the accident identified as Ivan Seruma, the official photographer of the pageant, was rushed to Nsambya hospital on the request of his mother.

It is thought some of Seruma’s ribs were broken.

Rema, who looked worried and complained of severe back pain and headache, was said to be out of danger.

According to the pageant’s trainer, Ronnie Nsubuga Ronnie, he was in a separate car behind the ill-fated Prado.

“We cut the journey short to save a few people who had come out alive,” said Nsubuga.

The team was destined to Mbarara to officiate at the Miss Tourism Ankole after another team had earlier on also left from Fort Portal.

The bad news came just a few days after three people died in a road accident along Kampala-Masaka road.

This was revealed by the UOC President William Blick at a function to sign the Memorandum of Understanding for the facility at the police headquarters on Saturday afternoon.

“We intend to make Uganda one of the best sporting countries by producing sportsmen at the international level. “We need to create and groom sportsmen like athletes not by mistake but intentionally and this can only be done through partnerships like this to provide the facilities. Its true the police force has always been at the forefront of producing the best sportsmen in the country including athletes; the facility would serve good in promotion of talents.”

The Uganda Olympic Committee President said as part of the program, order they would spot and groom sportsmen before teaching them in a bid to help them uplift their respective talents and the first priority, Mr. Blick said would go to policemen.

The Inspector General of Police Gen. Kale Kayihura on the other side applauded the Olympics body for such a good gesture which he said serves to promote the sports culture in the country.

“This is a historic moment not only for the police force but also the country at large. A lot of talent has always been wasted due to absence of a good training facility but this is a nice opportunity to identify and nurture talents that would later represent Uganda on the international level,” Kayihura noted.

The police boss said that because the country lacked similar training facilities coupled with the harsh regimes that Uganda lost a great talent in John Akii Bua who won gold at the Munich Olympics games in 1972.

“You never know if there were better facilities he could have broken his own record but ended up being a victim of the instability in the country that forced him to seek refugee somewhere else. Its an indictment that we didn’t do what was expected of us,” Kayihura lamented.

The IGP said that the facility would help improve on the fitness levels of the officers through daily practice and shooting skills   as well as promoting good health among the policemen.

In an interview with Chimpreports, Uganda Olympic Committee Vice President Ambrose Tashobya explained that once completed, the modern elite training facility would sit on 4.1 acres with over 20 sports federations housed.

“It will have the green pitch to be used for football, rugby and handball among other disciplines; the multi-purpose hall, indoor stadium for basketball, gym and sports museum. The facility will also house a 25 meter swimming pool and a shooting range among other sports disciplines,” Tashobya noted.
