UNRA Probe: Chinese Companies Ordered to Refund over Sh31bn

Parliamentary Committee on Statutory Authorities and State Enterprises (COSASE) has Tuesday ordered 5 Chinese companies that were found guilty of misappropriating funds that were meant to compensate people affected by different road constructions projects, information pills http://corpuschristimiami.com/wp-content/plugins/the-events-calendar/admin-views/tribe-options-general.php to refund the money by close of business today.

These companies include; China Railway No5 Group for Gulu-Acholibur road, China Railway 18th Group for Musita-Lumino-Busia road, Chonqing International Construction Company for Acholibur-Musingo Road, China Railway No.3 Group for Kanoni-Sembabule-Villa Road, Contractor, Zhongmei Engineering group for Olwiyo- Gulu road.

On Tuesday, the committee ordered all the companies to refund over Sh31bn to UNRA that was disbursed to compensate affected persons.

China Railway No. 5 group has been ordered to refund Sh8,430,889,426bn, China Railway 18th Group Sh14,010,339,782bn, Chonqing International Construction Company- Sh3,585,896,620bn, China Railway No.3 Group- Sh5,515,326,209bn while Zhongmei Engineering group has been ordered to refund Sh272,791,378m.

According to the Auditor General’s report into UNRA financial statements, a total of Sh47.7Bn was advanced to the contractors for land compensation but only Shs 15, 145,845,412bn had been paid in compensation while the balance of Shs 32, 554,154,588bn remains unaccounted for.

During earlier meetings, MPs discovered that some of the Chinese companies had transferred the money from Ugandan banks to their accounts in China while others had fixed the money to earn them interest.

The Committee chaired by Bugweri County legislator, Abdu Katuntu took a decision to block all accounts for the said companies until the money in question is recovered.

The committee has vowed to issue more sanctions to the companies that will fail to refund the money by end of business today which include making arrests to the company representatives.

The recovered money will be deposited on UNRA Kampala station account Stanbic Bank 9030006387976.
