UNRA, Police Launch Operation to Fight Road Carnage

Road accidents have been on the rise in recent months

Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) has joined hands with Traffic Police and Ministry of Works to combat road carnage.

The three government bodies’ operation had been code-named FikaSalama (Reach your destination safely).

The operation comes against the backdrop of increased road accidents especially along Kampala-Masaka road.

Officials said the exercise is ‘punitive’ and ‘deterrent’ in nature.

ChimpReports understands that vehicles in dangerous mechanical condition are being impounded while errant drivers face arrest and prosecution.

The operation aims at cracking down on reckless overtaking, over speeding and lack of driver permits.

UNRA explained that they are mandated to operate safe roads hence their participation in the exercise.

The body further stated that in the interim, a term maintenance contractor has been deployed to work on the bad spots.
