Uganda to Benefit From the Tripartite Free Trade Area

“Who would you trust to compete for presidency between Gen Muntu and Col Kizza Besigye at the national level?; as the youth we maintain Besigye is our presidential candidate,” the youth were heard in a discussion at FDC office at City House.

“We know Besigye hasn’t yet revealed his plans but we will petition him and make sure that he at last stands for the party flag.”

The youth plan to among others mobilize funds through fundraising within Kampala and metropolitan areas to be used during the campaigns.

This comes after the party president; Gen. Mugisha Muntu announced his bid to run for the party bearer during the party’s special delegates conference.

“I have been traversing the country with the aim of building party structures but now I am offering myself as a flag bearer and the doors are open to whomever wants to stand against me,” Muntu said early this week while speaking to party members during the swearing in ceremony of the new cabinet.

He said once elected, he would give his all to capture power in the much-anticipated election.

The Free Trade area represents an integrated market of  26 countries with a combined population of 632 million people which is 57% of Africa’s population providing a total Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of USD$ 1.3 Trillion and contributes 58% of Africa’s GDP.

According to Kyambadde, the Tripartite Free Trade Area is a unique and ambitious free trade area in that it covers aspects which are not in conventional free trade areas.

“Ordinarily free trade areas are about trade liberalization through the removal of tariffs and charges of equivalent effect. In the case of the Tripartite Free Trade Area there are three pillars; namely, market integration, cooperation in industrialization and infrastructure development and the movement of business persons.” she added

Some of the benefits of the of the tripartite FTA are free movement of business persons which will enable the nationals of the Tripartite Member States to cross borders and conduct trade in goods and services.The Tripartite region will also provide the potential for tourism and movement of professionals across the borders in the region after the conclusion of the negotiation of trade in services in phase II of the negotiations.

The launch of the Tripartite Free Trade Area is a step towards the African Economic Community as envisaged by the AEC Treaty (more popularly known as the Abuja Treaty) which provided for the African Economic Community to be set up through a gradual process, which would be achieved by coordination, harmonization and progressive integration of the activities of existing and future regional economic communities (RECs) in Africa.

The Tripartite FTA is a building block towards the Continental Free Trade Area (CFTA). It is important to note that negotiations for the CFTA were launched on 14th June, 2015 during the recently concluded 25th African Union Summit in Sandton, South Africa.
