Addressing supporters at a rally held at Boma grounds in Gulu municipality on Saturday evening, the President said that the process is finalized and awaiting parliament to endorse the city status early next year.
“You don’t need to worry anymore because government has agreed to turn Gulu into a city. It had not been confirmed because parliament was busy working on municipalities and new constituencies but as soon as elections end, it will be summoned and approve Gulu as a city,”Museveni said on Saturday.
The president equated the process of approving Gulu’s city status to church confirmation where a believer has to go through a series of tests before being confirmed which he said the Northern Uganda town had passed through successfully.
“I was confirmed in church in 1957 but before that I had to do catechism, reciting the Apostles ’ Creed, and passing exams but I could not go for holy communion before the Bishop could lay hands on me. The same way, Gulu has passed all the stages but the Bishop has not yet put hands on the city.”
In an interview with Chimpreports, Alfred Ogwang, the NRM flag bearer for Gulu Municipality said the town has fulfilled the requirements necessary for it to be granted the city status.
“We have an airport that is soon being uplifted to international standards on top of better roads, hospitals, university and other facilities like hotels that are up to the required standards,”Ogwang told this website.
The Gulu mayoral aspirant however expressed concern over the cleanliness of the city which he said is not yet up to standard but noted this would improve as time goes on with strict measures put in place to address the issue.
