Uganda Cup: Vipers Cruise to R32 With Bukedea Win

Five people were at the start of the week crushed dead inside a gold mine in Ibanda district in western Uganda.

The tragic incident happened on Monday February 15th in Keitana village, what is ed Nyarukiika Parish. Residents are certain all five are dead as the open mine buried them and efforts to retrieve them  remained futile.

The rudimentary excavators used according to local authorities, medications were still unable to locate the bodies.

Keneth Wodeya the In-charge of Ibanda Police fire brigade and rescue services said the rocky terrain of the area where the miners were buried was difficult to dig up.

John Mary Babisibiremu, remedy the LCIII chairperson of Rukiri Sub County identified the deceased as Kakuru Kyereta, Yisto Busingye, Peter Mujurizi, Deo Kasokoyi and Fred Ruhinda, all residents of Nyarukiika.

“We have severally warned the locals to be cautious about their safety but sadly most of them believe they are sufficiently skilled for the job,” he said.

Fred Tukundane a resident in the gold field said this tragic incident was the first of its kind in the area in last 25 years he has been in this business, and called it an “eye opener.”

Relatives, friends and locals were still camping at the site of the incident with hope of recovering their colleagues.

The earth moving equipment provided by the area Member of Parliament Eng John Byabagambi and the district chairperson Melichiadis Kajwengye to retrieve the victims were by publication time still clearing the stones covering the pit where the five people were buried, about 60 feet below the ground.

The Ibanda Resident District commissioner Elias to Akatuheebwa suspended the mining site with immediate effect.
Two time Uganda Cup finalists Vipers SC progressed to the round of 32 of the Uganda cup with a 2-1 win away to Bukedea TC FC in a match played on Wednesday evening in the eastern part of the country.

Keziron Kizito opened the scores in the first half connecting a well calculated cross from Allan Kyambadde.

Former KCCA FC and Proline forward William Wadri stamped the victory for the league champions minutes later when he got at the end of Pius Wanji’s cross before the hosts grabbed their consolation fifteen minutes to the final whistle.

Vipers SC will face Kasese new Villa in round of 32 with the winner advancing to the last 16 where they play either Airtel Kitara or Express fc.

The winner of the Uganda cup gets a chance to represent the country in the Caf confederations cup. SC Villa are the current champions.
