UCC to Honor ICT Innovators at Acia Awards Exhibition Today

The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) is set to recognize and honor outstanding ICT innovators at the Acia awards 2016 exhibition that will take place at Serena hotel today.

The exhibition that started at 9am in the morning will see innovators showcase their different projects before a panel of nine judges, stuff who will determine the most outstanding.

According to the Chairman Organizing Committee, visit this also Head of IT at UCC, Peter Mukuru, the awards are meant to “engage young impressionable minds, harness their potential and equip them with the tools to become feature innovators that will create various ICT innovations to solve local challenges and gain international recognition.”

This year, a special category was introduced in the awards, aimed at recognizing the Government of Uganda’s development efforts, especially in the promotion of e-Government and unlike others, this was decided by a public vote.

Members of the public were for the first time allowed to vote to determine which Government Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDA) offers the Best e-Government Service in the country. The five-day voting exercise, which was done electronically, took place from April 25th to 29th, 2016 on the ACIA website.

Twelve MDAs submitted entries for this Award category in a bid to demonstrate their ICT proficiency in offering e-government services to Ugandans.

Other categories in the awards include; Young Innovators, Business Excellence, Service Excellence, ICT for Development, and Digital Content

The Young Innovators category targets the youth and has 3 subcategories in which they can participate. The Primary and Secondary School students who compete at a regional level and winners who progress will compete nationally.

Business Excellence Award recognizes the most innovative locally developed ICT solution aimed at improving the performance of an organization

ICT for Development Award is aimed at recognizing the best ICT solution developed to address any of Uganda’s challenges in Education, Health, Agriculture, Environment sustainability, Government services, ICTs for the disadvantaged, and the advancement of women.

Digital Content award recognizes the most innovative approaches in the compilation of local text, images, or sound into a program, application or product that enhances the value and use of communication platforms in Uganda.
