Cooperatives in Uganda under their umbrella body Uganda Cooperative Alliance (UCA) in conjunction with the Uhuru Institute for Social Development will have set aside of a weeklong celebrations ahead of the international day of Cooperatives.
In a bid to highlight the importance, concerns, achievements and challenges of the different and numerous Cooperatives, the alliance will have several activities ahead of the 23rd UN International day of Cooperatives slated for 1st July.
While launching the Cooperative week at the cooperative Alliance’s office on Nkrumah road,Kampala on Thursday, Uhuru Institute operations director, Jane Akello believes the cooperative week will help in creating awareness about the role and need of the Cooperatives in Uganda.
“I am delighted that once again we shall be joining Cooperatives in celebrating their international day. We all know that Cooperatives speak for the collective value, importance and needs of our communities,” she said.
The week long celebrations will start this Friday 23rd June to 1st July ahead of the international day. This will be the second time that the activity week will be held.
The activities will be as follows;
23rd to 25th June
National prayers will be held for the spirit of voluntarism, servant leadership and integrity within the cooperative movement. This will cut across the different religious groups.
Monday, 26th June
Cooperatives will carryout a national wide blood donation drive at 7 regional blood banks. This is in the bid to fulfill the commitment to the 7th International cooperative principal of concern for community.
Tuesday, 27th June
In 2016, cooperatives planted a tree at district headquarters in the country to signify the rebirth of the cooperative movement in Uganda. This time round, cooperatives will be expected to mobilize their own tree seedlings and plant on a piece of land of their choice.
Wednesday, 28th June
On 17th March, Cooperatives had a national consultative meeting on the Cooperative Societies amendment bill/ Act, 2014. Therefore on this day, there will be consultations across the entire country.
In each region, about 50 cooperative leaders will be meeting to review the bill.
Thursday, 29th June
Unlike on previous occasions where exhibition has been done on the main day, this time round, cooperatives will bring their products for exhibiton two days to the main event. This will take place in Mbale Municipality.
Friday, 30th June
This will be a day for the Ignatius Kangave Musaazi me lecture under the topic “Cooperatives and the struggle for inclusive economic development.” This will explore the crisis of non-inclusive growth in Uganda over the last 30 years. The lecture will make specific recommendations on what should be done to enable an effective cooperative movement.
Saturday, 1st July
The week long celebrations will end with the commemoration of the International cooperative day under the theme “Cooperative ensure no one is left behind”
Bugisu Cooperative Union will host this year’s celebrations in Mbale Municipality.
