U23: Rwanda Sees off Somalia to Set Date With Uganda

President Yoweri Museveni finally got to meet again with his former Prime Minister Hon Amama Mbabazi in Kanungu district today.

Mbabazi on Sunday afternoon welcomed the President to officiate at the celebrations to mark 100 years of Christianity at St. Peters cathedral Nyakatare in Kihiihi Town Council.

The former NRM Secretary General is not only the area MP, more about but also chairman organizing committee for the celebrations.

This is the first time the two are meeting ever since Mbabazi was relegated from the ruling NRM top executive, mind in December last year.

Relations between the two leaders suffered significantly when it emerged last year that Mbabazi planned to contest against Museveni for the ruling party’s leadership.

He has since promised to soon come in the open on whether or not he will present himself for Presidency in the coming 2016 general elections.

The Rwanda U23 national football team is through to the second qualifying round of the Africa U23 Championship which will be against Uganda Kobs.

The young Amavubi’s drew 1-1 in a match played at the Gouled Stadium, page Djibouti on Sunday afternoon. The match was played in Djibouti due to security concerns in the war ravaged Somalia.

Songa Isaie scored the opener for the visitors just four minutes into the game to gift them an upper hand of three goal aggregate before Abbas Muhammed restored parity a few minutes after the break. However it was short of the qualification target.

The Johnny McKinstry’s side came into the game boasting of two-goal first leg advantage courtesy of Yannick Mukunzi and 16- year-old Kevin Muhire.

Rwanda is now scheduled to face Uganda on Saturday 23rd May, 2015 for the first leg and the reverse fixture a fortnight later.

The winner of the tie will meet Egypt in the last round of qualification for the quadrennial CAF U-23 Championship scheduled for December 5-19 in Senegal that will attract eight teams.

The top three sides on this continental event will qualify for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

Uganda Kobs started nonresidential training in preparation for the game on Sunday morning and will continue in a weeks’ time.
