Tourism: Rwanda to Boost Kigali’s Beauty

Stephen Ahimbisibwe, the chairperson Amacumu N’ebitara paid allegiance to Prince Kijanangoma, saying, “We have started with the cleaning exercise and after clearing the bushes around this dilapidated place, we shall construct a temporary fence around it.

“We are in final stages of soliciting funds to renovate the palace which is in a sorry state after King Oyo abandoned it.”

Gilbert Kayondo, one of Kijanangoma’s mobilisers, said “A Good Samaritan has given us 130 litres of paint to renovate the palace. Many people are willing to give us money to work on this residence so that it becomes comfortable for Kijanangoma”.

After renovation, Prince Kijanangoma will in early May this year declare himself King and those who are loyal to him shall start paying allegiance to him at his Rwengoma palace as King Oyo remains at his Harukoto palace.

This however has left King Oyo in panic.

On Sunday, Oyo embarked on an outreach program in churches comforting his subjects that there is no one who would take over the kingdom.

Prince Kijanangoma recently threatened oust his cousin Oyo whom he accused of overstaying in Buganda Kingdom and falling short of restraining the Queen Mother Best Kemigisa from interfering in palace affairs and selling off Kingdom land.

Prince Kijanangoma said after overthrowing King Oyo, he would embark on developing the kingdom, establishing income generating projects and institutions that benefit the people of Tooro.

He said the 18 years of King Oyo’s reign have been useless for the people of Tooro and that it’s high time they moved a vote of no confidence in him.

But Tooro Deputy Premier, Hon Harriet Nyakake disclosed in March that King Oyo “does his work by lobbying for financial support and investments,” adding, “His ministers implement these projects.”

She said the projects are “all on ground and visible,” citing Kyenjojo hospital which is being redeveloped by foreigners.

Nyakake said Oyo is targeting wealthy businessmen to invest in the kingdom’s agriculture sector and also promote the tourism industry “since Fort portal is envisioned as a tourism city in the Uganda 2040 Vision masterplan.”

The Deputy Premier called for calm among the subjects of Tooro, adding, “Those claiming Kingship are serving their personal interests.”

Since his announcement a month ago, prince Kijanangoma’s bid to topple Oyo has gained momentum with elders and youth supporting him in his move on grounds that the king has neglected them in development activities.

“100 Resilient Cities Program” that was pioneered by Rockfeller Foundation aims at helping cities around the world become more resilient to the physical, social and economic challenges that are a growing part of the 21th century.

The Premier pointed out that the workshop is a good opportunity for the City of Kigali to improve its existing resilience efforts as well as a good forum to bring together key partners of the City of Kigali and its stakeholders in consolidating and building more urban resilience for Kigali City.

“The Government of Rwanda considers Kigali membership to the 100 Resilient Cities Program as an opportunity to demonstrate its ability and capacity to uplift resilience not only locally but both nationally and internationally, and therefore supports all efforts in strengthening resilience,” said Murekezi.

The City of Kigali was selected to be among the 100 Resilient cities due to its longstanding commitment to implement solutions that increase community’s capacities to prepare for, withstand and bounce back from shock and stresses.

Located at Rwanda’s geographical heart, the rapidly growing City of Kigali is not only the national capital, but also the country’s most important business centre.
