While some sections of the public said 23 people had died in the nasty incident, police at midnight said the number had risen from 7 to 9.

Sebei Region Police spokesperson Lamech Kigozi said a Fuso brand truck registration number UAN 447x “from Jinja lost control at Kitigoma, swerved to the right of road and rammed into two taxis registration numbers UAW 200W and UAL278F – which were both headed to Jinja side.”

“The accident happened around 21:45 hours. The dead are now nine and 13 have been evacuated to Jinja and Kawolo hospitals respectively,” he added.

Obore told ChimpReports that MP Omodoi “had surrendered his car to the team organizing women’s day in Katakwi” hence using a taxi as a quick means of travel.

The accident has since left the country in shock.

Eyewitnesses say police and Good Samaritans used axes and pangas to extract body parts of the accident victims from the mingled wreckage of the ill-gates cars.

The wreckages literally sat on a pool of blood.

Passengers were heard screaming their hearts out for help.

Kigozi said the taxi registration no UAL 278F has been dragged into a makeshift church.

By midnight, Kigozi said the rescue operation was still ongoing.
