Teachers Threaten Another Sit-Down Strike

Teachers insist they wont be touching chalk before their demands are heeded

Prosecution alleges the accused and others still at large between December 2014 and January 5, 2015 in Mayuge district and Bwebajja in Wakiso District with intent to intimidate the public and sections of the Muslim faith for political, social and religious aims, involved themselves in the murder of Sheikh Ductoor Suudi Bongo Muwaya and Mustapha Bahiga.

“The 12 are also accused of terrorism contrary to section 7(1) and 2(a) of the Anti-Terrorism Act 2012 for with intent to intimidate the public for political, religious and social aims involved themselves in the murder of Sheikhs  Ductoor Abdulkadir  Suudi Muwaya ,Mustafa Bahiga and the attempted murder of Dr.Haruna Jemba,” read the state prosecutor.

The group was recently apprehended from different parts of the country before being detained at the Special Investigations Unit in Kireka from where they were brought to court.

On Thursday afternoon aboard a Uganda Police mini bus and amidst tight security, the group was brought to the Nakawa Magistrates court and charged.

Teachers under their umbrella association UNATU have threatened to hold yet another strike at the beginning of the first term once the Education ministry does not hand them the full Sh. 25 billion given to them by President Yoweri Museveni.

In their petition to the Minister, the teachers resolved that all their funds be paid through the Union of Teacher’s SACCOs, and that the Ministry immediately releases all the funds.

Once no action is taken after 90 days from today, the teachers vowed to lay down their tools once again.

On receiving the petition, Minister Muyingo on behalf of the ministry promised to accord utmost attention to the matter. The minister also called for a much needed calm as the first term opens in a week’s time.

“I call upon all teachers who have not yet prepared for the new term to do so as soon as possible.  In the last PLE results we registered over 6800 candidates as failures; so a lot has to be done to prevent such incidents from happening again,” he said.

Mr Muyingo had moments earlier come under attack from the angry teachers; after he asked that a few of them meet him in the boardroom.
