Silverbacks Begin Zone V Championship with Victory Against Somalia

The Uganda men’s national basketball team (Silverbacks) made a perfect start at the Zone V championships in Cairo, ailment Egypt with a comprehensive victory against Somalia on Monday.

Pitted in Group B against Somalia and Burundi, the Silverbacks made sure they got victory in their opening game with a 94-72 score.

Mande Juruni’s charges had an explosive start sweeping through the opening quarter with a 39-19 lead.

However, Uganda gave away the 20 point cushion at the start of the second quarter with the Somalians rallying back to level the score at 42 all midway through the quarter.

Somalia claimed the second period with a 27-13 score albeit the Silverbacks led 52-46 at halftime.

Uganda eventually powered through after recess combining for 42 points in the final two quarters while Somalia were limited to just 26 with the final score reading 94-72 in favour of Uganda.

Stanley Ociti(Uganda) had a game 33 points and also added 10 rebounds while Pegues made 20 points. Team captain Stephen Omony and Joseph Ikong scored 17 points each.

Uganda returns to action on Wednesday in their final group game against Burundi.

The finalists at the Zone V championship will qualify for the 2017 Afro Basket champion to be held in August in Congo Brazzaville.
