The Mufti of Uganda Sheik Shaban Ramadhan Mubaje has commended the Committee for Daawa in Africa for sponsoring an annual quiz/competition about the family and companions of the Prophet; beliefs and rights.
The Mufti was speaking yesterday at a ceremony held at the UMSC Headquarters Old Kampala by the UMSC Zaka department during which the winners of this year’s quiz received their prizes.
Since 2009, 131 Muslims in Uganda have won Hijja trip and items like Laptops, Smart Phones and Quran teaching machines by participating in the quiz.
In his remarks, the Mufti commended the Royal Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Director of the Daawa Committee for Africa Prince Dr. Bandar Bin Salman Bin Muhammad Al-Saudi for investing in efforts to promote Hijja and Daawa in Africa.
He said in addition to winning prizes, those who participate in the quiz learnt a lot about Islam.
The Mufti however, noted that the quiz can only be passed by those who have acquired knowledge about Islam.
He therefore urged Muslims in Uganda to prioritize Islamic education for their children, saying that it will also address the current scarcity of Imams.
“Muslim students are increasingly opting for secular subjects at the expense of Islamic studies.”
The Mufti said that out of over 2600 students, who graduated recently at the Islamic University in Uganda, only about 12 had done Islamic theology and among these, only three were Ugandans.
The Mufti lauded the UMSC Secretary for Zakat Dr. Ziyad Swaleh Lubanga for coordinating the quiz in Uganda on behalf of the Daawa Committee for Africa.
He also commended the Director of the Cultural Centre of the Royal Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Dr. Ibrahim Abdallah Addakheel for establishing worm relations with UMSC and assured him of continued UMSC cooperation in Daawa and other bilateral issues.
On his part, Dr. Addakheel expressed his high respect to the Mufti of Uganda Shk. Shaban Ramadhan Mubaje and reiterated his continued cooperation and support to UMSC in various programs.
He said all those who did not get prizes but participated in the quiz are winners as well and extended his congratulations to them.
Dr. Lubanga said that after filling in the quiz, the forms are marked by a local committee comprising of highly learned Muslim scholars chaired by himself.
Other committee members are; Dr. Mubarak Swaleh Lubanga, Dr. Abdul-Hafiz Musa Walusimbi, Shk. Shafie Edris Songolo and Shk. Umar Ibrahim Guggumizza.
The marking is done using a guide provided by the sponsors. One must pass a minimum of 18 questions to enter the draw for selection of winners.
After the marking, the forms are sent to Riyadh in Saudi Arabia where ten winners are randomly picked.
The winners of this year’s Hijja trip were; Mutunzi Ahmad Kitunzi and Kalabuki Ibrahim. These have just returned from their Hijja.
The ceremony was also attended by the Deputy Muftis, Shk. Abdallah Semambo and Shk. Muhammad Waiswa, the Secretary General Hon. Ramadhan Mugalu and other senior UMSC management Committee members.
