Salva Kiir’s Guard Gunned Down

South Sudan presidency and military intelligence are investigating circumstances under which one of President Salva Kiir’s guards was gunned down in Juba on Monday night.

2nd Lieutenant Akok Kuol Akuak, pharm was among the elite Presidential Protection Unit that forms the last security ring of the President.

Presidential Press Secretary Ateny Wek said Akok was in company of Regimental Sergeant Major of the National Security Deng Kucdit in Hai Nimra Talata when a gunman opened fire on them, killing both instantly.

Aweny further revealed that the assailant was also shot dead after exchanging fire with the military police in the vicinity.

“What I can say now is that the motive of the attacks remains unclear to us. But we are already investigating the matter, ” said Aweny.

He stressed that Akok was off duty when he was attacked in an incident that underscores the growing insecurity in Juba.

South Sudan government troops are currently fighting rebels in the northern part of the country.
