RWANDA: More Than 25,000 Cases Mediated at Sector, Cell Level

Out of 27926 cases received in Rwanda over the last 6months, information pills local mediation committees locally known as ABUNZI have mediated and successfully conducted 25,502 cases, 542 cases transferred to formal courts, and 1932 cases are still pending.

Rwanda’s Ministry of Justice along with her chief partner in justice the Netherlands embassy in Rwanda, have praised the work done by Abunzi mediation committees.

Vasco Rodrigues the Netherlands secretary to Rwanda said; “we are happy about how the support we offer to the justice sector and we are trying to support the government’s policy of reducing cases that go in court.”

He advised that Abunzi mediation committees should be empowered in order to reach the goals.

Speaking to ChimpReports Kalihangabo Isabelle Rwanda’s Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Justice said the ministry is focused on empowering mediators by giving trainings and facilitating them with an aim of reducing cases taken to courts.
