A bitter row has erupted between the Rukungiri NRM leaders and the Rubabo County Member of Parliament, mind http://centroilponte.com/wp-content/plugins/layerslider/wp/menus.php Mary Paula Turyahikayo who they accuse of being a sympathizer of opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC).
Rukungiri NRM party leaders and members accuse Hon. Turyahikayo of supporting FDC’s Fred Turyamuhweza who defeated NRM’s Winfred Matsiko in the race for District roads committee chairperson.
The concern was raised during the Rukungiri NRM annual general meeting held on November 24th at Riverside hotel and chaired by the District party chairperson, Maj. Gen. (Rtd) Jim Muhwezi Katugugu.
One of the leaders, Canon Sabiti Mahirane says he did not get the logic of how FDC won the seat when they had two voters while NRM had six.
They also wondered how Hon. Turyahikayo swept elections in the parish of Bugyera – Kitojo in the February General elections while all other NRM members including the president lost in that parish.
“If you are an NRM flag bearer at parliamentary level you are supposed to canvass votes all other NRM flag bearers in your electoral area, why was it that in some areas the MP would sweep the votes while other members including the president got nothing from there?”one of the members wondered.
Edward Byamukama, the NRM chairperson Buyanja Sub County said that in the Sub Counties of Buyanja, Ruhinda and Southern division which were swept by FDC are not easy for the NRM to put a project since they cannot have mandate of the council to bless it.
He said he tried to open an NRM office at Buyanja Sub County but councilors did not allow him since majority are from opposition.
Maj. Gen. (Rtd) Jim Muhwezi, requested members to reconcile and forget what happened in the last elections and focus now on LC 1 elections which are scheduled for January 2017 if government gets funds.
“We must leave behind the differences that we got during the last elections and we re-organize for the coming elections which are very important for NRM and the government,” he said.
He added that most NRM members lost because of the intrigue which he said was among the victims .
“This time we should forget whatever we talked about each other and concentrate on the local council elections.”
Muhwezi also noted that Hon. Turyahikayo was using extension of electricity in his constituency as her campaign tool without considering that it was government programme but only use the chance that her husband Eng. Godfrey Turyahikayo is a commissioner in rural electrification agency.
He said that, Rukungiri woman MP, Winfred Matsiko was the chairperson of natural resources where rural electrification falls but Turyahikayo would not mention that.
“She would only use her name and husband as only people behind extension of power in the district,” said Muhwezi.
Hon. Turyahikayo and Winfred Matsiko, all members of District NRM council did not attend the meeting.
It’s alleged that come 2021, Turyahikayo harbors intentions to contest for District Woman MP seat, now occupied by Winfred Matsiko.
