Rugunda Dismisses Otafiire ‘Lies’ on Rukiga Polls

The Prime Minister of Uganda, malady Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda has refuted claims by Justice Minister Gen Kahinda Otafiire, for sale that President Yoweri Museveni fronted a candidate of his choice to stand for the seat of District Woman Member of Parliament on the ticket of National Resistance Movement (NRM) party in the coming district of Rukiga.

Dr.  Rugunda says that President Museveni has not sent anybody to stand in Rukiga saying that anybody claiming to have been sent by the President to stand in Rukiga is an impostor.

The Premier was yesterday responding to reports that Minister Otafiire, approved two weeks ago camped in Rukiga to convince voters to vote Caroline Kamusiime Muhwezi as NRM candidate on District Woman Member of Parliament seat.

Otafiire traversed several sub counties in Rukiga convincing voters that Kamusiime has been fronted by President Museveni to represent them in parliament.

The minister went ahead and donated bags of Posho to the voters in each house hold in Rwamucucu Sub County.

Otafiire’s actions caused tension among the voters, according to local leaders.

The Kabale District NRM Elections Officer, Maurice Mugenga Keitaba said the President needed to come out and clarify on whether handpicked a candidate even before campaigns started.

Keitaba added that he his office feared to stop Gen. Otafiire and Kamusiime from campaigning since he claimed to have been sent by the party national chairman.

When confronted on why he was involved in illegal campaigns, Gen.  Otafiire said there was no problem with that.

Otafiire says that Kamusiime’s early campaign were a sign that she is more capable of representing people of Rukiga in parliament than other aspirants.

Candidate Caroline Kamusiime Muhwezi declined to comment on the matter.
