It was mixed results for Ugandan athletes Winnie Nanyondo and Halima Nakaayi as the duo participated in the 800metre heats at the ongoing Olympic games in Rio de Janeiro on Wednesday.
Nakaayi ensured a slot in the semifinals of the 800m heats while bronze medalist at the 2014 Commonwealth games Winnie Nanyondo failed to progress.
Nakaayi finished fifth in heat 4 of the 800metre race clocking a personal best 1:59:78 in a race won by Canada’s Melisa Bishop.
Nakaayi took an early lead racing in prime position in the first 300metres but later gave away the lead towards the finish eventually settling for fifth.
The 22 year old who was among the last Ugandans to qualify for Rio posted a personal best of 1:59:78 in her maiden appearance at Olympics.
Winnie Nanyondo failed to qualify in heat 5 after finishing sixth at 2:02:77 in a heat won by Kenya’s Eunice Sum Jepkoech.
South Africa’s Caster Semenya also qualified for the semifinals after winning heat 2 clocking 1:59:31.
