Kabale district has been hit by Red Gum Lerp Psyllid, a deadly pest that affects eucalyptus trees.
The lice like insects eat up the leaves on the eucalyptus tree before encroaching on the stem, resulting in branch die back and death to suppressed trees.
The insects were first noticed in Kabale district about a year ago.
Now, residents claim the pests have spread to their homes and are giving them a hard time.
Wisdom Akantorana, a resident of Kigarama in Maziba Sub County, says the insects were moved to homesteads by wind and fire wood.
Akantorana says the insects bite them in the night, which has made their sleep a nightmare.
Aron Kamugisha, a resident of Mukasinde cell in Mwendo Parish in Kitumba Sub County, says the insects are literally sucking blood out of them and fears there could follow an epidemic.
Eric Tumwesigye Kigunzu, the Chairperson Kabale District council Natural resources, Production and Marketing Committee, says they have tried to eliminate the insects by spraying homesteads in vain.
Patrick Besigye Keihwa, the Kabale District LC V Chairperson, says experts from National Forestry Authority tried all methods to eliminate the pests, but they are resistant.
