Makerere University’s Professor from the College of Natural Sciences Prof Christopher Bakuneta who is currently on remand in Luzira Prison on rape charges has filed an application before High Court seeking to be released on Bail pending his trial.
Bakuneta who is accused of raping Versha Ntegeka, help http://dallassigs.org/components/com_docman/docman.php a student from the same university on March 27 this year, http://debbiehowes.com/wp-admin/includes/class-plugin-upgrader.php has asked Justice Yasin Nyanzi to release him on bail, stating that he has no other criminal charges against him and that bail is his constitutional right.
The suspect also holds that since the case was committed to High court for trial it means investigations are complete and there is no likeliness of him interfering with the witnesses.
Through his lawyer Francis Tumusiime, Bakuneta presented three sureties who included Mr John Bagamba, a tree breeder based at Kasangati and a friend to the applicant, Samuel Wamanga a warden at Uganda Wildlife Authority and Raymond Katereka, the General Secretary at School of Africa Conservation of Makerere University.
Court also heard from the lawyer that the victim Mrs. Versha has regularly been going to Luzira to check on the accused in Luzira Prison.
This, according to the lawyer, shows that the rape case is not as serious as it has been portrayed.
Senior state Attorney Isaiah Wanamama did not object to the substantiality of the sureties but opposed the release of the applicant on grounds that there is no document that has been produced in court to prove his residence.
Justice Nyanzi has set the 14th October to deliver his ruling on this matter.
Meanwhile, the court Judge also set the 12th of October to hear an application filed by Ruhinda County MP Rtd Capt Donozio Kahonda who is seeking orders from the High court to suspend criminal proceedings that were instituted against him before Jinja Magistrate court in October last year.
