Police: New Equipment to Quell Election Violence

Uganda’s Prime Minister Rt. Hon. Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda has praised President Museveni for his exemplary leadership in the struggle to liberate Uganda from previous ruthless regimes.

Dr. Rugunda said Museveni never surrendered his cause nor delegated even when the  struggle was faced with setbacks.

Rugunda lauded the President for using the leadership skills he attained from Dar-es-Salaam University to successfully mount a rebellion with 43 others.

He told the gathering that when the group faced defeat in 1979, Museveni still gathered the survivors in a lorry and ferried them to Tanzania to find solace.

This he said demonstrated true leadership and empathy for his (Museveni) followers adding that no wonder the President has ably offered good leadership as President as well as mobilizing his National Resistance Movement (NRM) party.

In a rather emphatic tone, Dr. Rugunda refuted media claims that often portray President Museveni as a dictator and terrible person.

He asserted; “Museveni is not a dictator. For all the years I have known him, I want to say he’s a very humble and patient person. When you give a view that is contrary to his, he will give you time to make your case. If it’s strong and logical, you win him over.”

Rugunda in a special way paid tribute to NRM historical, Prof. Edward Rugumayo for boldly admitting to host President Museveni even when he (Rugumayo) was a Minister in the Amin government.

Ruhakana Rugunda was part of the 5 member FRONASA (The Front for National Salvation) committee including President Museveni that planned and mobilized the rebellion in 1972.

Uganda Police Force has confirmed purchasing a fleet of new vehicles to quell any form of violence during and after the February 18 polls.

Responding to a question from ChimpReports over anticipation of violence after the forthcoming elections, approved http://cprocom.com/portal/components/com_docman/themes/default/templates/documents/list.tpl.php the police spokesperson Fred Enanga the new equipment will be put to good use when need arises.

“It is not true that we are anticipating any  form of violence after elections and in any case Ugandans cannot allow to be part of this but in case there is any case of violence, there we have the ability to disperse the crowds,” the police spokesperson Fred Enanga responded.

According to the police mouthpiece, they started the process of purchasing new equipment two years ago in a bid to replace the outdated ones adding that among the new fleet includes, public order management vehicles, construction equipment, troop carriers, ambulances, fire- fighting equipment   and other armoured vehicles.

“Some of these are to be used in our foreign missions like in South Sudan and Somalia where we need armed personnel carriers and other armoured vehicles considering the nature of mission we are engaged in.”

He added: “Having participated in peacekeeping missions in Darfur and Liberia where we were successful, the United Nations still needs our services and the need to purchase new equipment to be used.”

Enanga stressed that the new fleet of vehicles is part of the batch brought two months ago that included patrol vehicles and those for directors to keep law and order.

He said the construction equipment which includes earthmovers would be used in foreign peace support operations which among others require construction of camps.

“The new fleet of vehicles was procured in good faith to replace the ageing ones so as to fully fight crime in the country,” Enanga assured.
